A million pet names a minute! Creating a publicly accessible deep learning API in R with GCP
People can't stop talking about deep learning, but isn't it just a machine learning model like any other? YES! In this workshop we'll work through creating your first deep learning model in R with Keras to generate adorable pet names, and how to deploy the model as a Docker container in Google Cloud Run in a scalable fashion so you can name as many pets-per-second as your heart desires. By the end, you'll have your very own API for naming all your pet friends AND you'll know the basics of how machine learning is deployed in enterprise settings. For this workshop, you'll only need a basic familiarity with R! No previous knowledge of Docker or Google Cloud required.
Required tools:
a laptop with admin privileges
The following programs installed (if you’re having trouble installing them come early!)
RStudio Desktop https://rstudio.com/products/rstudio/
R version 3.6.2 https://cran.r-project.org/
Anaconda Python 3.7 https://www.anaconda.com/distribution
Docker https://www.docker.com/products/docker-desktop
A credit card to set up a Google Cloud account (don’t worry, we’ll only be using products from the free tier!)
Ideally, the workshop would be 3 hours with 30 minutes of refreshments and socializing beforehand, so we figured socializing would start at 5:30, at 6 we would give welcome speeches from the different organizations, and by 6:15 the workshop would start. People would be finished as early as 8:15, but we would stay until 9 helping everyone.
Bios:
Heather Nolis is a founding member of the AI @ T-Mobile team, focusing the conversion of cutting-edge analyses to real-time, scalable data-driven products. She began her career in neuroscience but once realized how heavily that field relied on software built by other people, she pivoted - deciding to make software herself. You can find her @heatherklus on Twitter, where she speaks about diversity in technology, the ethical implications of data, and cats.
Dr. Jacqueline Nolis is a co-founder of Nolis, LLC, a data science consulting firm. She has over a decade of experience using data to help companies including DSW, Union Bank, Microsoft, and Airbnb. She has a Ph.D. from Arizona State University where her research focused on electric vehicle route optimization. For fun, she likes to use machine learning to do weird things like generating offensive license plates. You can find her @skyetetra on Twitter.
